The body assures that the government is working to deliver the 2026 budget "with guarantees."

Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo assured this Sunday that the government will "pull all the stops" not only to present the 2026 budget, but also to do so "with guarantees" of passing it, and that they will be expansionary accounts.

In an interview with El País, Cuerpo stated that in September the government "will take the first steps" in processing the public accounts, with the approval of the spending ceiling and the distribution of deficit targets.

He emphasizes that the balance between growth and deficit and debt reduction is being maintained, and underlines that Spain will have a primary surplus (excluding debt interest), so he believes the government is capable of fulfilling the social and investment commitments of recent years, which constitute an "eminently expansionary" budget.

"We are managing to achieve all of our economic policy objectives. After all, the Budget is the way to express these priorities. Nothing is being left undone. We want to pass this Budget, but we are not leaving anything behind," he added.

Housing is the government's remaining challenge for the legislative term, an area for which "there is no silver bullet," according to the minister, who explains that the government is acting on all fronts to correct this problem and restore a public housing stock for affordable rentals.

Regarding the tariffs imposed by the United States government on Europe, the Economy Minister says that, in the short term, they will not force a change in Spain's growth forecasts, as it is one of the least affected countries, although they will pay attention to the most exposed sectors.

In this regard, the Government is working on a business aid plan to discuss with parliamentary groups and provide tools to the companies most affected by tariffs, especially the smallest ones, "which are less able to survive this new context," he noted.

Regarding BBVA's takeover bid for Sabadell , he maintains that the conditions imposed by the Government—on which the European Commission has opened a case against Spain—seek to protect employment and financial inclusion, and he is willing to provide the Community authorities with all the necessary legal reports and information.
